At BSMS we are commited to building strong links with the community, be they local residents, organisations, healthcare providers or businesses. Our aim is to make a difference to the community, raising awareness of biomedical issues and the understanding of medicine. Throughout the year, we organise a range of educational and community engagement events and activities.
Opening our doors
Each Autumn, BSMS hosts the Annual Discourse, held in partnership with the Sussex Community NHS Trust. Renowned national presenters are invited to deliver a relevant lecture on aspects of medicine.
BSMS participates in the Brighton Festival with events such as 'Dementia: facing the next ten years', a debate examining dementia from multiple perspectives.
Newly confirmed professors at BSMS deliver an Inaugural Lecture. This is a great opportunity for the public to engage with an aspect of their work and gain a further understanding of medical research.
BSMS on the road
Previous activities have included Scanning for Gold, a travelling exhibition focusing on the anatomy of high performance athletes who were scanned at BSMS's Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre. Delivered in partnership with the University of Brighton's Chelsea School, the exhibition appeared at hospitals, polyclinics, libraries and universities across Sussex.
Many of our staff and students are involved in the annual Brighton Science Festival, engaging the public with science.
BrightMed is BSMS's outreach programme which identifies young people in the Susssx area with the potential to become one of 'Tomorrow’s Doctors'. These young people are supported by a rolling five-year programme which works with students through to the end of year 13.
