Biography

Dr Joe Stammeijer graduated from Guys, King’s and St Thomas’s School of Medicine with his MBBS and a BSc in Psychology in 2016, and after foundation years in Brighton and London trained in Core Psychiatry in Yorkshire. A brief detour into Emergency Medicine occurred during the Covid-19 Pandemic, where after working as the High Intensity User fellow he completed his PGCE in Medical Education at BSMS. Now working as an Associate Specialist in Forensic Psychiatry in the south of England, he is also a specialist volunteer for the Red Cross Psychosocial Support Team and an expert contributor for SchoolTV. He writes regularly on the intersection of mental health and tabletop games, and gives academic guidance to several charities.

Research

Dr Joe Stammeijer's active research has centred around improving medical emergency responses in psychiatric inpatient services – he has led simulation based evaluation and training systems to improve emergency skillsets in mental health professionals, and continues work to improve physical healthcare for inpatient mental health settings. He has written on the importance of developing mentor/mentee dynamics separate to the default of doctor patient dynamics in clinical settings, and is developing research to look at novel teaching methods such as the use of roleplay games in education.

Teaching

Dr Joe Stammeijer is currently a Lecturer in Medical Education at Brighton and Sussex Medical School. He has taught in all settings from individual to lecturing through his career, in both Psychiatry and Emergency medicine. He delivered psychiatry teaching to Hull and York Medical School, and was a teaching fellow in Emergency Medicine in Brighton. He is now the physical health training lead for his hospital, delivers clinical skills training and leads medical emergency simulation training for mental health professionals. His teaching journey began with magic of all things, winning an award for founding the King’s College London Magic and Hypnosis Society.
