darrell-evans-profile.jpgProfessor Darrell Evans, Associate Dean and Head of Anatomy at BSMS was a guest presenter at TEDx Brighton held at the University of Brighton's Sallis Benney Theatre recently.

You can view Scanning for Gold: the making of a high performance athlete, where Professor Evans profiled BSMS's Scanning for Gold project which looks at the anatomy and physiology of five prospective Olympic and Paralympic athletes as they prepare for 2012 London Games.

Working in partnership with the University of Brighton's Chelsea School, the athletes were scanned producing medical imaging at the BSMS's Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre. Photography of each athlete training was taken by Brighton-based photographer, James Lewis, which has formed into an exhibition looking at the science behind the athlete.

Darrell's passion for championing the amazing world of anatomy has led him to become engaged in a number of public understanding of science events and has resulted in him being asked to contribute to TEDx.

His main research is directed at understanding the way tissues such as muscle, tendon and cartilage develop in the body. By examining the way cells come together to make these tissues, he hopes to find out if it's possible to recreate those processes when tissues become injured or diseased.

About TEDx

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
