Columbia University Lecturer to Visit BSMS for Motor Neuron Disease Symposium

chris-henderson-thumb.jpgGuarantors of the scientific journal, Brain, have supported an application by Professor Nigel Leigh and Dr Majid Hafezparast for a Visiting Lecturer Award to enable Dr Christopher Henderson from the Motor Neuron Center, Columbia University, New York, to visit BSMS and The University of Sussex (Life Sciences) for the week of September 10th-14th, 2012.

Dr Henderson, Co-Director of the Columbia University Motor Neuron Center, is an outstanding translational neuroscientist who has made important contributions to understanding the processes of neuronal cell death and neuroprotection. He has been instrumental in the development of stem cell technologies in relation to Motor Neuron Disease and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis.

During the week of his visit Dr Henderson will have informal meetings with neuroscientists and clinicians, chair a 'masterclass' for neuroscience PhD students, and contribute with BSMS, Sussex and external speakers to an all-day 'mini-symposium' on Friday 14th September on: 'Motor Neuron Disease: New Mechanisms, New Strategies for Therapy'. Dr Henderson will also deliver 'The Brain Lecture' as part of this symposium.

This award provides an opportunity for BSMS to develop collaborations and interchanges in translational neurosciences with an outstanding neuroscientist and a leading neuroscience institution.

If you would like further information on the Symposium please contact Pat Butler: or 01273 876768.
