Student inclusivity

Our BSMS student inclusivity partners were appointed in March 2024. They have experience of and are committed to working towards tackling marginalisation and promoting social justice in medicine by challenging racism, sexism, classism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism, religious intolerance and body-shaming.

The student inclusivity partners work closely with the BSMS EDI team helping to promote, support and develop inclusivity initiatives across all intersections.

Meet our inclusivity partners

Skye Perry (She/her)

I am currently a first-year medical student at BSMS. Before medical school, I worked as the Student Union Executive Officer for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) at my college where I studied my A-levels. I have always had a passion for EDI, particularly advocating for gender equality, feminism and learning disability awareness. I also researched the impact of gender inequality in the surgical profession for my extended project qualification, and I have since made it my mission to contribute in any way I can to create equity for all doctors. I believe that creating a safe, positive and accessible environment for medical students to thrive is vital to our success as future doctors, and I am prepared to work alongside my peers and colleagues to support this.

Eva Shrestha (She/her)

Hi everyone. My name is Eva and I am currently a first-year medical student, straight from A-levels. I grew up and studied in North-West London and my ethnicity is Nepalese. As a student inclusivity representative, I aspire to create a safe space here at BSMS where every medical student feels valued and respected, regardless of their background or identity. I’m dedicated to promoting diversity, as well as equity, to ensure that individuals have equal opportunities and are celebrated for their unique contributions.

Aahana Jain (She/her)

I am a first-year medical student at BSMS. I am an international student from India, which means that I understand how crucial it is to be inclusive and to feel that you are a part of something bigger than yourself. I am also a school leaver, which on its own is quite a big change as well, so I understand how important it is to stand your ground and find your kind of people. The differences that make us unique should not separate us, but rather hold us together. I think inclusivity is an action, which should be done actively, making it easier for all of us to live up to our potential. I aim to be able to solve any issues that arise with regards to inclusivity; students should feel free to email me.

Echo Tanna (She/xe)

I am currently a first-year medical student at BSMS and prior to this, I studied medicine in Ukraine. I have been practising intersectional activism for over three years and have worked with various charities. With Brighton and Sussex already being so diverse in population, I have seen a lack in a diversity in infrastructure and am determined to put this right to improve people’s lives from an individual to a community level. From misogyny, racism, classism, LGBTQIAP+ phobia and ableism, I believe the system needs anti-colonial equity until equality. As future doctors, we can make the medical world better, one good habit at a time. The more people feel included, the more social a society and the more communal a community.

BSMS Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Awards

The creation of the BSMS Student EDI Awards is a way of recognising and celebrating the passion, dedication and time devoted by students in their promotion of, and commitment to, equality, diversity, inclusivity and accessibility across all BSMS activities. This may include leading on EDI projects, speaking at events, supporting staff to reach EDI objectives, student led research, supporting the development of community engagement or any other relevant activities across BSMS.

For these inaugural BSMS Student EDI Awards, there will be two EDI awards.  The Awards will recognise work that may include, but is not limited to:

  • Continued contribution towards helping to embed equality, diversity and inclusivity into a BSMS course or module curriculum
  • Activities that aim to adapt or change procedures, policies or practices to make them more inclusive
  • Role models that create a sense of inspiration and motivation
  • Initiatives or actions that help students from underrepresented groups feel welcome and included.
