Explore how your brain works

BrightWAMS is an interactive outreach programme run by BSMS medical students. The programme is intended to encourage school children to become enthused about the science of the human body and the mind.

They appeared at a workshop at Hove Park Upper School as part of the Bright Sparks Family Day, a popular day of varied hands-on workshops and demonstrations designed for parents and children to share.

Their event entitled, 'Explore how your brain works', considered different aspects of neuroscience and was presented by BSMS students with a special guest appearance by Professor Darrell Evans, patron of BrightWAMS.

The session attracted such interest that a repeat performance was made to a second packed house.

Laboratory Life

BSMS Professor of Public Health, Helen Smith and BSMS lecturer and artist Anna Dumitriu contributed to an interactive art/science laboratory, exhibition and talks programme exploring the use of new technologies in biomedicine. BSMS students Rosie Sedgwick and Simon Hall worked on some of the installations. Artists and scientists collaborated to create five new projects investigating this ambivalence in an innovative, publicly accessible, open laboratory.

Artists and scientists were encouraged to work together in the same space creating new artworks, while pondering scientific questions. What made this exhibit different is that the public were invited to observe and interact with the artists and scientists as they worked, through an open laboratory session a week before the event opened.

Music and Territory

BSMS lecturer in physiology, Dr Harry Witchel, considered Music and Territory in his talk for Big Science Saturday, at the Sallis Benney Theatre, a day of popular science, talks, debates and interactive games. He provided a wealth of evidence pointing to one answer: We, like birds, gibbons, and other musical animals, use music to establish and reinforce social territory. He suggested that music can influence what you think, what you decide to buy, and even how smart you are.
