Brighton and Sussex Medical School is committed to providing first class postgraduate training which links clinical medicine to basic science and research.

Strong, internationally recognised research groups have been established in the fields of infectious diseases, immunity, international health, neuromuscular biology, oncology and primary care.

Postgraduate opportunities are available in two forms:

Taught courses

The MSc in Global Health has been jointly validated by the Universities of Brighton and Sussex. This course may be taken as an intercalated degree for those who have completed three years of a medical degree.

A range of other Master's courses are run in partnership with the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine (IPGM) at the University of Brighton. IPGM will be integrated fully with BSMS in August 2012, to provide a sustainable basis for the further development of postgraduate medical education, in continued partnership with the Kent, Surrey and Sussex NHS Deanery, Brighton University's Faculty of Health and Social Science and NHS Local Education Providers.

As part of the integration of IPGM and BSMS, a number of the courses running within IPGM will be redeveloped for joint validation by the Universities of Brighton and Sussex. The intention is that the first intake for the new courses will be in September 2012 and the admissions criteria for these will be published in early 2012.

Research degrees

BSMS offers postgraduate research degrees (MPhil, PhD, MD), awarded jointly by the Universities of Brighton and Sussex.

BSMS Postgraduate projects range in scope from basic science related to cellular control mechanisms through clinical projects to ethics and social science.

BSMS’s overlapping research groupings and research environment provide the graduate student with potential for interdisciplinary interactions. Projects are available where supervisors with a background in fundamental science are working together with clinicians to provide an exciting and productive environment. In addition, some projects are enhanced by the input of ethics research into research on human genetics and disease.

Many postgraduate students are supervised by both BSMS faculty and faculty from the Universities of Sussex or Brighton, as well as clinicians from the NHS, providing students with a rich research experience. There are strong links with neighbouring research centres, such as the Blond McIndoe Research Foundation, East Grinstead.
