Global Health- Malawi

In the 21st century, improving health and achieving equity in health is one of the world’s greatest challenges. At a time of unprecedented integration and interdependence of economies, environments, societies and cultures, these global processes interact with national, through to local and personal factors to impact the health of individuals and populations.

The MSc Global Health at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) aims to develop students’ understanding of these global health determinants and their potential solutions in order to produce individuals who are equipped to contribute to the improvement of health and the achievement of equity in health worldwide.

The course brings together experts from disciplines within and beyond the health sciences to deliver a vibrant programme that will appeal widely, covering topics such as: emerging infectious diseases; global epidemiology of communicable and non-communicable disease; healthcare systems; the interplay between health and poverty; the relationship between disease, globalisation and global governance, and the impact of culture and societies on health.

The MSc in Global Health is a full time one-year modular taught course, comprising 5 taught modules and a dissertation. The course adopts dynamic and interactive teaching methods, using case studies alongside current evidence and insights to facilitate students’ understanding of global health issues.

Students are encouraged to be self-directed and manage their own learning through making use of the wide range of available learning resources at BSMS. The dissertation allows students to develop an area of expertise through the in-depth focus on a topic of their particular interest.

What the course offers

The combined knowledge and resources of two universities, Brighton and Sussex, plus the Institute of Development Studies, a leading global charity for research, teaching and communications on international development.
Broad range of subject content, from the global epidemiology of disease to the interplay between health and poverty and the relationship between disease, globalisation and global governance.
Two terms of teaching based in the city of Brighton & Hove; one term focused on a research-based dissertation with options to be located abroad, subject to approval.
Teaching methods informed by and reflective of a research culture.
Teaching from leading experts including Melanie Newport, Professor of Infectious Diseases and Global Health BSMS; Stefan Elbe, Professor of International Relations, University of Sussex; and Maya Unnithan, Medical Anthropologist, University of Sussex.
Links with health programmes in developing countries.

Career opportunities
The MSc in Global Health aims to develop students’ skills to work as global health practitioners, policy makers or researchers including within health systems, governments, non-governmental organisations and international health and development agencies.

Entry requirements
First- or upper second-class undergraduate honours degree, or successful completion of at least 3 years basic medical science at a UK medical school (having gained at least 360 credits) with a guaranteed place to continue medical studies on completion of the MSc.
