anatomy courses

Welcome to Anatomy at Brighton and Sussex Medical School.

Anatomy is an integral part of the undergraduate medical course and is widely recognised as one of the selling points of the programme. Anatomy at BSMS is designed to be an exciting and varied theme within the course. There is a strong focus on multidisciplinary teaching and all aspects of anatomical teaching and learning are reinforced by functional and clinical input.

The Anatomy Laboratory is located in the Medical Teaching Building on the University of Sussex Campus and was opened in 2003. The facility includes a fully equipped state-of-the-art anatomy dissecting room. Although the focus of the Laboratory’s use is the undergraduate medical curriculum, where dissection is the corner stone of anatomical teaching, we also help to deliver anatomy teaching as part of a number of other undergraduate and postgraduate courses as well as professional training programmes.

The Anatomy Laboratory is licensed under The Human Tissue Act 2004, regulated by the Human Tissue Authority. The licence holder is the Registrar of the University of Sussex and the day-to-day responsibilities for the licence reside with the ‘Designated Individual’ (DI), currently Professor Darrell Evans who is head of anatomy.

Interested in running a course in the Anatomy Laboratory?

The undergraduate medical course has priority use of the Anatomy Laboratory; however we are pleased to contribute anatomical teaching to other courses and programmes where we can. This will obviously depend on the availability of the facility as well as staff, many of whom are heavily engaged in biomedical research. If you are interested in requesting a teaching session you must fill in a session proposal proforma so that we can assess the feasibility of your request. There will be a breakdown of applicable charges available upon request. Please find below a brochure outlining more details about the facility and also a proposal proforma.

Interested in becoming one of our Anatomy Demonstrators?

Anatomy Demonstrators are essential members of our teaching team and are important players in the development of our students thorough guidance, support and delivery of high quality anatomical teaching. We hope all demonstrators will be enthusiastic teachers, good communicators and display excellent interpersonal skills. In addition they should possess the ability to effectively and cooperatively work within a team. If you are interested in becoming one of our demonstrators, there are three routes you can apply for:

    1. Undertake a four-month Anatomy Demonstrator rotation as part of the Brighton and Sussex F2 programme. If you are interested in this route you should direct enquiries to the South Thames Foundation School.
    2. Undertake a six or 12-month period as an Anatomy Demonstrator. Demonstrators on this programme are also required to take part in a 1:5 rotation as Resident Medical Officer at the Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital, covering 24 hours per session. As well as the demonstratorship element of the programme, successful candidates will liaise with all consultant users (most of whom work within Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust) and have a fantastic opportunity to see a wide variety of surgical procedures and techniques. Please see the following document for more information.
    3. Undertake a stand-alone Anatomy Demonstratorship. This is a voluntary position. If you are interested in this route you should direct enquiries to Professor Darrell Evans (d.evans@bsms.ac.uk).
