Research focus:
Much of my research work has concerned the impact of the social environment on health. In particular I have focused on the role of depression in mediating between the external world and physical health, the persisting influence of early life conditions on adult health and the epidemiology of mental illness. More recently I have studied the role of religious involvement on health in European countries, and specifically whether religious involvement can affect the impact of social conditions on health.
I am now moving from working with cohort studies to investigating the potential for primary care databases and electronic patient records to contribute to epidemiological research across a range of disciplines.
