Centre for Dementia Studies

The Centre for Dementia Studies (CDS) works to improve the quality of life of people with dementia and their family and carers by improving the quality of treatment and care they receive.

The CDS is a joint venture between BSMS and Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. Its programme of work in applied health research, education and policy in dementia is designed to improve the quality of life of people with the condition.

Good-quality dementia care requires multi-disciplinary and inter-agency working, with patients and carers at the core. The CDS works in collaboration with a number of partners, including the Universities of Brighton and Sussex, patient and carer groups, primary care providers, Health Education England South East (HEESE), clinical commissioning groups (CCGs), acute NHS trusts, local authority social service departments, private care providers, wider regional and national universities, and other organisations. We also work with NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC), Kent Surrey and Sussex (KSS) and the Clinical Research Network (CRN) KSS.

Our aims

  • To deliver a programme of applied health research in dementia that will build the evidence base on care, treatment, and causation
  • To deliver research that makes a positive difference for people with dementia and their carers
  • To deliver a programme of excellent and useful education and training (including at PGCert, PGDip and MSc level) that will develop and deliver skills for the wide multidisciplinary and interagency matrix of health and social services needed in dementia
  • To accelerate research locally and regionally by providing an infrastructure for collaboration and access to clinical populations
  • To support health and social services in the development and evaluation of new and improved models of service delivery for dementia
  • Work with national and multi national organisations in delivering much needed clinical trials.

"I guess it's just me and the partner that I'm with for Time for Dementia, we're very fond of our family. So I think the biggest benefit is meeting them, because they’re a very strong, loving couple, and they're very nice, and I think my life's been kind of enriched by meeting them." – Medical Student
