Teaching focus:
- The bio-psycho-social model and the biomedical model, how each framework operates and is applied in clinical consultations. Illustrate using concrete examples from practice how each model shapes diagnosis, management and treatment decisions taken by doctors and patients in the consultation.
- Culture, diversity and the medical profession.
- Special Study Modules: Applying qualitative methods to Health Services Research
Research focus:
To produce high quality research that has immediate relevance and impact on clinical practice, medical education and continuing professional development.
Clinical decision-making in acute and chronic conditions managed in primary care e.g. obesity, depression specifically in the context of ageing.
Patient’s beliefs and experience of illness and how these impact on professional decision-making and specifically departure from practising evidence based medicine.
The application of qualitative methods to develop an understanding of professional and patient behaviour from which context sensitive interventions are developed to promote best practice. The synergistic use of qualitative and quantitative methods in the application and evaluation of interventions.
