Previous Roles
Mycobacterial immunologist with over 20 years experience working on the human immune response in tuberculosis and leprosy, and on immune responses induced by BCG vaccination. Main research interest is the development of correlates of protection for tuberculosis, and the development of biomarkers of infection/protection for use in TB vaccine trials. Main research collaborations at present involve KPS Malawi, and IVI, South Korea. Roles at LSHTM include Head, Department of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (2002-2007) and Deputy Director (Research) (from September 2008). Contributions to research consortia include leadership of 3 INCO-DC/INCO-DEV projects on TB and leprosy, partner in EU TB-VAC, Gates Grand Challenge 6-74, and IDEAL Leprosy Consortium. Steering Committee member of EU TB-VAC, GGC6-74, IDEAL, and new EU TBVI. Member of MRC Infection and Immunity Board, 2004-2008. Member of Scientific Advisory Boards for AHRI, Addis Ababa (2007- ) and Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp (2008- ).
Role undertaking on EU TB diagnostic project
Coordination of work for EU ActionAid project with ongoing work for GGC6-74 at KPS, Malawi, including overall responsibility for immunological assays to be performed at KPS. Liaison between KPS and LSHTM, London. Grant holder for LSHTM/KPS part of ActionAid grant at LSHTM.
