University of Cape Town
The University of Cape Town is consistently rated as the leading University on the continent of Africa. Its mission statement is ‘to be an outstanding teaching and research university, educating for life and addressing the challenges facing our society’. This encompasses a commitment to research-based teaching and learning, and critical enquiry in the form of the search for new knowledge and better understanding. The University supported the establishment of the IIDMM in order to facilitate research into the leading infectious causes of death in South Africa and in sub- Saharan Africa as a whole.
IIDMM
By virtue of its nature, the IIDMM benefits critical mass with collaborative access to equipment, core administration and a very active seminar culture. UCT has significant funding from National (e.g. National Research Foundation and MRC) and International (National Institutes of Health, European Union, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome Trust) sources. The European Union (EU) programme supports recruitment at several clinical facilities and laboratory work at the IIDMM. A particularly attractive feature of the EU programme is that it brings in regional partners in Malawi thus fostering South-South collaboration.
