Current role

Professor Rob Wilkinson is a Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow in Clinical Tropical Medicine (personal chair of Infectious Diseases at Imperial College London) and MRC programme Leader in the Division of Mycobacterial Research at the National Institute for Medical Research, Mill Hill, UK. Both posts are largely held at the University of Cape Town (UCT) where he is Honorary Associate Professor. Wilkinson trained in Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh and Hammersmith Hospital London; and in Cleveland, USA. His research interest is HIV associated tuberculosis. Laboratory work is based at the Institute of Infectious Diseases and Medicine (IIDM, UCT) and research underway includes randomised controlled trials of isoniazid preventive plus antiretroviral (ART) therapy versus ART alone for the prevention of HIV-associated tuberculosis; and prednisone versus placebo as adjunctive management of the HIV-TB associated immune reconstituion inflammatory syndrome. Wilkinson holds the research strategy portfolio for the IIDMM and has published 85 scholarly contributions including recent articles in the Lancet, Journal of Clinical Investigation and PNAS.
