infection and inflammation

Name: Dr Gail Davey

Academic position: Senior Clinical Research Fellow

Research:

I am a medical epidemiologist with a primary care qualification specializing in non-communicable diseases in a low-income country setting. Over the last seven years, I have gained extensive experience of postgraduate teaching and research in Ethiopia, and have developed a wide network of contacts within Ethiopian Higher Education and research institutions and acted as a focal person for many international collaborations. My place of employment at Addis Ababa University has given me a unique vantage point from which to identify and develop the most outstanding Ethiopian postgraduate students.

Current research:

Since 2005, my main area of research has been podoconiosis (endemic non-filarial elephantiasis). I have developed, secured funding for, and led, a multidisciplinary program of research into podoconiosis which covers aetiology (genetic and biochemical) and consequences (economic and social) of disease. Alongside this research, I have assisted a local NGO in developing a primary care strategy to provide prevention, treatment and rehabilitation to an area of 1.5m residents.  Parallel with my clinical and research work in this area I have also raised the local and international profile of the disease using a range of advocacy tools.
