Carmel Keller is a founding member, and now Acting Head, of the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine. 

Carmel’s current role is focused on working with the Dean, other Heads of Divisions in BSMS, the Faculty of Health, the NHS and private health sector to build a strong academic base for medical education and training on the South East Coast. Carmel will lead the Institute into full integration into BSMS to enable seamless education from medical student to experience consultants and GPs, underpinned by developing programme in pedagogic research.

Carmel’s teaching expertise is based around innovative curriculum design, predominately based on specialist registrar training needs, providing robust learning, academic skills and theoretical underpinning to day-to-day clinical and professional activity. Having previously been a Lead R&D Officer in acute trust and expanding the cardiology research unit, she continues to enjoy teaching academic and research skills across all courses in the Institute.  Carmel currently advises on methodology and  methods for a range of masters level research, as well as recently supervising a PhD student using mixed methodologies.

Carmel’s masters degree is in Evidence Based Practice from the University of Oxford which she puts to full use in the Institute by supporting students in using – as well as doing – research in practice.

Carmel’s recent supervision includes:

“Culture and the Management of Diabetes in Malta” (PhD supervision).

Also Masters’ dissertations, namely:

Time, practice and accuracy – an assessment of South African Emergency Care Practitioner ability to initiate thrombolysis in acute coronary syndromes using the 12 lead ECG for decision making. 

Intra-operative peri-prosthetic fracture rates of modern cemented versus hydroxyapatite coated (HAC) uncemented hip hemi-arthroplasty stems used for the treatment of elderly patients with displaced intracapsular femoral neck fractures.

 

Risk Stratification tools used to accurately predict mortality in high-risk patients for Trans-catheter aortic valve implantation.

 

The influence of dental health promotion has on parental decisions when introducing a cup.
