medical education
As a new medical school, we recognise that we have a special responsibility, and an excellent opportunity, to look carefully at how we teach medicine and to develop innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
To do this we have created the Medical Education Unit, a group of clinicians and educationalists who have a particular interest in this area.
The initial focus of the Medical Education Unit has been to contribute to curriculum development and to provide training for our staff in teaching and in student selection.
The research programme has started with observational studies to evaluate the short and medium term outcome of several of those processes which we believe to be novel to BSMS: the experience of Year 1 students in primary care placements; the value of secondary care visits in Years 1 and 2; the contribution of portfolio learning used from the outset of the course; the process and assessment schemes for the OSCE examinations held in Years 1 & 2; the achievements of early inter-professional learning; the contribution of our semi-structured interview in the student selection process.
