Teaching focus:

I lead the Professional Development Programme at IPGM and coordinate Masters programmes in Medical & Clinical Education, Professional Development and Leadership & Management in Health Care. We have also developed a successful Masters programme in Commissioning in Health and Social Care. Recently I have been involved in teaching Chinese doctors and managers from Shanghai about the NHS, primary and community care and long-term conditions.

I have very much enjoyed being involved with the development of the BSMS undergraduate curriculum, and in particular the clinical component in the early years. I am particularly interested in how students develop their medical professionalism, especially ethical behaviour, and leadership / management skills, and chair a group which is reviewing the curriculum in this area.

Research focus:

My research for a Doctorate in Education (EdD) programme at the University of Brighton uses the ‘lens of complexity’ to view the development of professionalism and leadership skills at undergraduate level. Other areas of interest include quality improvement, international aspects of healthcare organisation and management, performance issues in medicine and medical regulation.
