Postgraduate Study

The current postgraduate psychiatry programme delivered through the Institute of Postgraduate Medicine, Brighton and Sussex Medical School, incorporates six modules that constitute the obligatory Royal College of Psychiatry training for specialist trainees. This MRCPsych course is delivered on one full day per week at a jointly developed (BSMS and Trust) educational facility. Modules 1 to 3 run throughout the year on alternate weeks with modules 4 to 6. This course will also form the basis for academically minded trainees to achieve an MSc as part of their training. Teaching is provided by both NHS Trust and University employees, incorporating up to date methods and placing the student ‘centre stage’.

These modules are:

1 Core principles of Psychiatry

2 Behavioural Science and Psychotherapy

3 Biological Sciences for Psychiatry

4 Clinical Specialities I

5 Clinical Specialities II

6 Research methods

The Institute has run other accredited M level modules such as Psychopharmacology, Old Age Psychiatry, Evidence Based Psychiatry and Liaison Psychiatry.

Popular study days also delivered by IPGM, aiming at Continuing Professional Development, include Clinical Psychopharmacology, Dementia Disorders and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. The Institute, in collaboration with the School of Applied Social Science, runs the Section 12 (of the Mental Health Act) Refresher course twice a year, which is periodically mandatory for approved senior psychiatrists.

We are further developing our Graduate programme to incorporate focused psychiatry teaching for foundation year trainees in collaboration with the Sussex Partnership NHS Trust Director of Medical Education.

Module leaders are:

Dr Richard Whale, Senior Lecturer and Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Naji Tabet, Senior Lecturer and Consultant Psychiatrist
