BSMS has identified Cancer as a key theme in its developing research portfolio, capitalising upon existing world class scientific research institutes such as the GDSC (Genome Damage and Stability Centre at the University of Sussex) and the 5*-rated Sussex Health Outcomes Research & Education in Cancer (SHORE-C) led by Professor Lesley Fallowfield.

BSMS recently appointed Professor Peter Schmid as Foundation Chair of Cancer Medicine to lead the academic development of cancer medicine in Brighton. This is part of a substantial investment in academic oncology that includes three new senior clinical and non-clinical appointments in addition to the existing two senior clinical lecturers in oncology and haematology as well as the expansion of the Clinical Investigation and Research Unit, and the purpose-built Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre. First class translational research facilities are available on the university campus, and BSMS is in advanced discussion with the Trust with the purpose of creating new clinical research facilities on the hospital site as part of the 3T-redevelopment programme.
