Current research

  • An epidemiological study at BSUH studying musculoskeletal symptoms and autoantibody production in patients with hepatitis C. This study is ongoing, and we have recruited a large local cohort of >3000 patients. We are currently investigating the effect of treatment with interferon and ribavrin on musculoskeletal symptoms.
  • A study is ongoing looking at academic and demographic/socioeconomic factors that affect student performance at BSMS.
  • A collaboration with the Faculty of Arts and Architecture looking at the development of new devices to improve adherence to hand exercises in patients with rheumatoid arthritis
    The use of mobile devices (smartphones and PDAs) in medical education
  • University of Brighton Faculty of Arts and Architecture: Supervising PhD student funded by Arts and Humanities Research Council studying development of hand exercise devices for patients with rheumatoid arthritis
  • University of Roehampton: Co-supervising PhD student looking at biomechanics of spinal movements in patients with chronic back pain
  • University of Brighton: Supervising Doctoral student studying development of clinical reasoning in junior medical students
  • 2010-2011: £40,000, Department of Health as part of national strategy to map and develop teaching, learning and assessment in substance abuse at BSMS
