Chair: Professor Kevin Davies

The Division of Clinical Medicine is one of the largest and most rapidly growing in the School. The two main components are Medicine and Psychosocial Oncology, headed up by Professor Lesley Fallowfield. There are also professors of psychiatry and ethics.

Medicine

Medicine takes the lead in the delivery and co-ordination of Phases 2 and 3 of the undergraduate curriculum in secondary care, including both medical and surgically-focused disciplines. Teaching will be delivered in part by faculty staff and by colleagues from our partner trusts, of which by far the most important is BSUHT. A wide range of teaching methods is employed, including PBL, clinical symposia, project-based work led by students, and more traditional bedside teaching.

In addition to co-ordinating the latter clinical phases of the BSMS programme, the Division also contributes extensively to clinically-focused teaching in Phase 1 (years 1 and 2), the year 3 Clinical Foundation Course which provides students with their first intensive exposure to hospital-based clinical medicine, and to many SSCs throughout the programme.

In collaboration with colleagues in the Universities of Brighton and Sussex, and BSUHT, Medicine also takes the lead in the delivery of the exciting and innovative year 3 Scientific Basis of Medicine Course, making extensive use of the BSMS faculty’s expertise in immunology, therapeutics, oncology and infectious disease, among other areas.

Psychosocial Oncology

The Divison is fortunate to incorporate Psychosocial Oncology, formerly part of the University of Sussex. The group, headed by Professor Fallowfield, is the foremost in the UK in this area, and as well as having an internationally-recognised research profile, contributes actively to the BSMS undergraduate teaching programme, particularly in the all-important field of communication skills.
