BSMS academic staff are appointed to one of the four Divisions in the School. Each contains interrelated groups, bringing together colleagues in related disciplines and providing a structure for academic management.

Prof Helen Smith heads the Division of Primary Care and Public Health Medicine. This also hosts the Primary Care Research Network - South East, headed by Prof Smith. There are groups working in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics and the Division is still growing.

The Division of Clinical Medicine, headed by Prof Kevin Davies, covers a wide range of disciplines including general internal medicine and its subspecialties, surgery (including orthopaedics and trauma medicine), anaesthesia and emergency medicine. Also located here are women and children’s medicine, the Psychosocial Oncology Research group headed by Prof Lesley Fallowfield, ethics (Prof Bobbie Farsides) and psychiatry (Prof Hugo Critchley).

The Division of Clinical and Laboratory Investigation, is headed by Prof Pietro Ghezzi. This includes the basic science groups in physiology, biochemistry, cell biology and immunology, as well as academic groups in imaging.

The Institute of Postgraduate Medicine (IPGM), has Carmel Keller as acting head. This provides a wide range of flexible learning programmes for doctors and established health care professionals through Continued Professional Development and higher degrees. The Institute draws on the expertise of over 130 leading contributors in Clinical Specialities, Education, Management, Public Health, and Professional Development and has an enviable reputation for individual student support.
