Primary Care Research Network (South East)

‘A new initiative to encourage and support high quality research in primary care.’

Brighton and Sussex Medical School has become the co-ordinating centre for a Primary Care Research Network for South East England (Sussex, Surrey, Kent and Thames Valley). With just under 6.5 million patients, the PCRN-SE network promotes the involvement of patients and practitioners in clinical trials and well-designed studies.

The PCRN-SE is one of eight new regional primary care research networks that cover England. This replaces the Surrey & Sussex Integrated Research Network (SIREN) and Kent Research Network, and includes Thames Valley Research Partnership, with which you may have previously been involved.

PCRN-SE covers Surrey & Sussex, Kent and Thames Valley and is part of the UK Clinical Research Network (UKCRN), a UK-wide initiative working to support the delivery of research across the entire NHS.

We are working with NHS, academic and industry partners to strengthen the evidence-base for the prevention, diagnosis and management of illness and disease in primary care.

‘It will bring immediate benefits to patients as it is recognised that practices who engage in research provide higher quality care and that their patients have better outcomes. And in the longer term, the network will have even greater impact as it strengthens our evidence base of effective treatments for patients with common and self limiting disorders.’
Professor Helen Smith, Clinical Lead

How are we organised?
The network is led by Professor Helen Smith, Clinical Lead, based at Brighton and Sussex Medical School with Research Network Managers Helen Membrey and Sarah Edwards. We have regional offices in Thames Valley and Kent.

What can we offer?

  • Access to a portfolio of high quality clinical studies
  • Coordinated support to help primary care teams host research and support recruitment
  • Funding for practices
  • Advice about participating in clinical trials
  • Studies that reflect practices’ interests

Details of studies
The PCRN-SE is supporting studies adopted by the national PCRN. You can find the national PCRN portfolio of studies at: www.ukcrn.org.uk/index/networks/primarycare/portfolio.html
