‘The Brighton and Sussex Medical School, a joint partnership between the two Universities of Brighton and Sussex, has been a huge success since its foundation in 2003, and the opening of the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre is a very significant milestone in the development of the Medical School.’

Professor Alasdair Smith, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Sussex

His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester KG GCVO toured the new Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre (CISC) on Friday 25 May, meeting donors, students and researchers. He unveiled a plaque and underlined the importance of having such a facility.

The Centre houses an integrated Positron Emission Tomography-Computed Tomography (PET-CT) imaging system and a 1.5T Magnetic Resonance (MR) imager. BSMS imaging scientists and other University and clinical research groups in oncology, neuroscience and infection/inflammation will all use this facility for research investigations. It will also be used for teaching, and will add to NHS capacity in the region.

Professor Alasdair Smith commented that ‘the mission of the Medical School is to work at the frontiers of research, to offer excellent and innovative teaching to students and to contribute to clinical excellence and patient care in Sussex.

‘The state-of-the-art equipment in the Centre will make a major contribution in all three respects. It will support top-class research across a wide range of areas within the Medical School and also in neuroscience and psychology. We particularly welcome the strong support it will give to the already impressive range of work being done in oncology, where the synergies between research excellence and clinical excellence are strong.’
