BrightMed (the BSMS schools outreach programme) aims to identify young people with the potential to become tomorrow’s doctors and who can contribute towards increased diversity within the medical profession, thus allowing medicine to better reflect the patient population.
BrightMed approaches state schools within Sussex during the spring term of each academic year. Schools will be invited to nominate pupils from their Gifted and Talented cohorts who have expressed a strong desire to study medicine or who excel at science and wish to explore a potential avenue for their talents. The focus of recruitment is on students who have no family background of Higher Education. BrightMed aims to recruit 50 year 8 students each year. Successful students will then join BrightMed at the beginning of the following academic year. BrightMed is a rolling five-year programme which works with students through to the end of year 13.
BrightMed will increase participants’ awareness of careers in medicine and the demands of the undergraduate medical degree. The programme aims to raise the aspirations of the students so they fulfil their academic potential and achieve success with both their compulsory and post-16 education.
BrightMed provides advice, hands-on experience and practical exercises to enable students to make informed decisions concerning their future education; and the confidence to submit strong applications to study medicine at BSMS or other medical schools in the UK.
