five-year bm bs degree

Our five-year medical degree leads to the qualification of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery and has been developed in close co-operation with the General Medical Council. It is designed to develop highly competent, strongly motivated doctors, committed to the highest standards of clinical practice and patient care.
BSMS offers a totally integrated approach to the development of your academic knowledge and clinical experience. This begins from the first term when, alongside your introduction to the fundamental medical sciences, you also begin to work with patients, gaining experience of real clinical problems in clinical settings involving a multi-professional healthcare team.
Throughout your medical studies you will develop the key personal skills and attitudes necessary for a successful professional career, in whatever direction it may develop.
These include:
- learning how to learn
- communication skills
- working effectively in multi-professional teams
- personal and ethical attitudes essential for good professional practice
- an appreciation of your responsibilities to your patients, to your professional colleagues, to society, and to yourself
- information and communication technology skills.
The intercalated degree
Subject to performance, you may be offered the opportunity to study subjects of your choice in greater depth by taking an intercalated BSc degree in a biomedical subject. This is taken between the third and fourth years of your BM BS studies and provides the necessary academic background for those who wish to embark on a career combining medical practice with medical research. You might choose neuroscience, molecular medicine, pharmacological sciences or experimental psychology, or to take an intercalated Masters degree.
