Biography

Professor Juliet Wright trained in general and geriatric medicine in the South Thames region and was awarded her MD from the University of Surrey for research involving recombinant human growth hormone in the preoperative optimization of elderly orthopaedic patients. She was appointed Senior Lecturer in Elderly Medicine at BSMS in 2007.

Research

Juliet's research studies focus on the assessment of frailty in the elderly HIV population and she is currently supervising two PhD students in this area. Alongside the clinical team at BSUH she has supported the development of the Silver clinic for older patients with HIV. Frailty assessment is an emerging field in elderly medicine and she has recently started working alongside Prof Malcolm Reed in a joint medicine and surgical clinic assessing older patients with breast cancer.

Juliet also has a research interest in the management of hypertension in the elderly with respect to cognition and the accurate assessment and management of depression. She is collaborating with King College London in a study assessing palliative care needs in the elderly population and has received grants from the NIHR as well as from industry.

Teaching

Juliet was initially appointed as Module 306 (Elderly Medicine) Lead and then Lead for Clinical Academic tutors in 2008. She was appointed as Phase II Leader in 2009.

Juliet is passionate about teaching and has received the following awards:

  • University of Sussex Teaching Award, 2012.
  • BSMS Best Teacher Year III and the entire BSMS curriculum, 2013
  • BSMS Best Teacher for the entire BSMS curriculum 2014
  • University of Sussex Award for Outstanding Support for the Learning Experience of Students.

Juliet was appointed as Director of Undergraduate Teaching and Learning 2015 and alongside Prof Sube Banerjee is working as part of a team investigating the role of longitudinal clerkships in the teaching of dementia to undergraduates.

Juliet is also Training Programme Director for Geriatric Medicine at HEKSS.
