Researchers at BSMS are working with specialists in informatics at Sussex and Brighton universities, developing a programme of interdisciplinary research in electronic patient records. We are interested in exploring the extent to which information is "hidden" from researchers.
Different ways of recording information can lead to different results when analysing in the electronic patient records which – increasingly - are used to understand our health service and patterns of disease. Clinicians, statisticians and epidemiologists work with experts in computational linguistics, human computer interaction, and information visualisation to improve techniques for analysing human health through records.
The PREP (Patient Records Enhancement Project) study focuses particularly on the importance of 'free text' in records. It brings together researchers from the Brighton and Sussex Medical School, the University of Sussex, and the University of Brighton. It is funded by the Wellcome Trust under the joint initiative in Electronic Patient Records and Databases in Research Scheme.
A new collaboration funded by the Technology Strategy Board (Rosemary Tate, Natalya Beloff), along with the General Practice Research Database is providing techniques for describing data quality in general practice.
