Sexual safety at BSMS
At Brighton and Sussex Medical School, we are unequivocal:
Sexual harassment, sexual misconduct, abuse, or inappropriate behaviour are never acceptable – they are #NeverOK.
Sexual misconduct may include:
- unwanted sexual comments or contact
- coercion, intimidation, or abuse of power
- stalking, harassment, or repeated unwanted contact (including online or anonymous)
- any non-consensual sexual behaviour
This list is not exhaustive: you are all entitled to feel safe and comfortable while studying; whether that’s on campus, in your teaching sessions, on placement, in your accommodation, or at student society events and socials.
These behaviours have no place in university, and especially in the medical profession, which is grounded in trust, respect, and patient safety.
If you have experienced a situation in which you were made to feel uncomfortable based on the comments or actions of others, regardless of who they are or what the context was, we encourage you to reach out and speak to someone about it. You will be listened to, supported, and taken seriously.
We take a zero‑tolerance approach, and any such behaviour will be treated with the utmost seriousness.
