Technology enhanced learning and curriculum design

Medical education research at BSMS has developed along with the undergraduate BM BS programme through the Department of Medical Education, a multi-professional group involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and learning.

Medical education research is being conducted as part of doctoral studies (MD/PhD/Professional Doctorate) and Masters programmes, as well as in collaboration with parent universities, by a multi-professional group of academics and clinicians. Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is a broad term used to describe many facets in the realm of technology in education. Primarily though, it concerns digital technologies and their effective use in teaching and learning, also known as ‘digitally enabled learning’.

What is TEL?

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is a broad term used to describe many facets in the realm of technology in education.

Primarily though, it concerns digital technologies and their effective use in teaching and learning, also known as ‘digitally enabled learning’.

What do we do?

The TEL team at BSMS focuses on three broad areas:

  • Promotion of digital tools for effective and engaging teaching based on sound pedagogy, including curating and communicating relevant information to all our course teams and educators.
  • Support of teaching in a digital age. This includes training, development and support in use of core digital skills and technologies needed for face-to-face, blended and fully online learning. We support with methodologies, software, and digital accessible practice.
  • Creation and management of bespoke digital learning resources, courses and applications. Click on these links for current examples: Anatomy Lab Interface iPad app, CAPSULE case-based learning resource, SmartDrug interactive drug formulary, Clinical Skills and Exam videos (login required to use these resources).

There are also other aspects to the role including strategy and systems admin. Watch our Introduction to TEL at BSMS for a quick overview (BSMS login required).
