Undergraduate teaching

The core undergraduate education from Clinical Neuroscience includes contributions to the undergraduate medical (BM BS) degree at BSMS. Our team manages teaching related to the year two module, Brain, Body and Mind, which forms part of the University of Sussex BSc Medical Neuroscience degree. Our department also leads the award-winning Time for Dementia (link) and Time for Autism (link) programmes. Our academic team contribute to undergraduate clinical teaching in Psychiatry, Neurology, Radiology and Imaging, and Dementia Care, as well as core scientific topics in neuroanatomy (including human dissection), physiology, development, and biochemistry throughout the medical curriculum. Each year, research faculty within the department teach a large number of year 4 Independent Research Projects (Module 404), many of which are hands-on research in the lab or with imaging. We also contribute to the breadth of the medical course, with department members offering many small-group Student Selected Components (SSCs).

Postgraduate teaching

MSc Ageing and Dementia

The Ageing and Dementia course is designed for a diverse range of professionals and graduates with an interest in understanding ageing and supporting people living with dementia. It is particularly relevant to those working across healthcare, social care, research, and policy, as well as individuals seeking to develop specialist knowledge in this increasingly important field.

The course brings together a unique set of educational initiatives aimed at deepening understanding of the ageing process and the aetiology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and management of dementia. It equips students with the knowledge and competencies required to improve the quality of life for older adults and people living with dementia through evidence-based care and practice.

The programme provides a comprehensive, holistic theoretical and practical framework for understanding ageing and dementia, enabling a broad perspective on their impact at the individual, community, and societal levels. Clinical knowledge is integrated with the development of key communication skills across health and social care settings, alongside training in research, critical appraisal, and leadership.
