Visit us

BSMS buildings are situated on both university sites in Falmer, approx. 4 miles (6 km) north east of Brighton city centre and at the Audrey Emerton Centre in central Brighton.

BSMS buildings at the University of Sussex include the BSMS Teaching Building (46 on map), BSMS Medical Research Building (45 on map), the Clinical Imaging Sciences Centre (39 on map) and the Trafford Centre (38 on map).

BSMS is based in Mayfield House at the University of Brighton, see map.

Campuses are located on either side of the A27 at the Falmer junction.


By car

The Falmer junction for both campuses is on the A27 road between Brighton and Lewes, about four miles (six kilometres) from the centre of Brighton.

Visitors driving from London and the north should follow the M23/A23 road towards Brighton. Before you reach Brighton town centre, take the A27 eastbound (joining visitors travelling from West) which is signposted to Lewes.


For University of Sussex – exit A27 at Falmer and turn left at the first roundabout into the campus.

For University of Brighton, Falmer - exit A27 at Falmer, and turn right at first roundabout (third exit), over bridge and straight over the mini roundabout. Turn right (about 100m from mini roundabout) into Village Way.

For University of Sussex – exit A27 then turn right (second exit) at mini roundabout. Over bridge and straight on at next roundabout.

For University of Brighton, Falmer - exit A27, then turn left at mini roundabout (first exit). Turn right (about 100m from mini roundabout) into Village Way.


Both campuses have limited visitor parking.

University of Sussex

There are a number of visitor car parks on campus. The closest are Biology Road (P3) situated to the side of the BSMS teaching building and Sussex House (P4) situated opposite BSMS teaching building entrance. The Science car park (P1) is the largest car park and is three minutes walk from BSMS. Seecampus map for more information.

Parking is £6 for six hours Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm, unless you have a scratchcard from your BSMS contact.

University of Brighton

Visitor parking is signposted at the entrance to the campus (take right hand fork at end of Village Way).

Car parks are unattended and objects of value should not be left in vehicles.


By train

Buy a ticket through to Falmer Station.

Visitors travelling via London and the West need to change trains at Brighton Station for Falmer - the journey to Falmer Station from Brighton takes about nine minutes.

Falmer Station is well-served by frequent local trains which run between Brighton and Lewes. You can also travel to Falmer Station from London and the east via Lewes.

By bus

Bus numbers 25 (or 25a) and 5B run between the centre of Brighton and the universities - from Churchill Square and Old Steine - bringing passengers directly onto the campuses. The 23 bus runs to and from the universities and Brighton Marina via the Kemptown.

In addition, bus services 28, 29, 728 and 729 operate between Brighton (Old Steine) and destinations east of Falmer. These stop outside the University of Sussex.

By taxi

Taxis are available at Brighton and Lewes Railway Stations and in central Brighton; it is about four miles (six kilometres) from the centre of Brighton to the University of Sussex. (There is no taxi service at Falmer Station.) Please note that traffic in Brighton can be congested and it is often quicker to take the train to and from Falmer (journey time about nine minutes).


By coach

Coaches to Brighton leave from London Victoria Coach Station and arrive at Brighton Pool Valley Coach Station. Services depart every hour during the day and the journey takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes. From Pool Valley it is a short walk - approximately 100 metres - to the Old Steine where you can catch a bus (see section on Bus travel) to the Falmer campuses, or alternatively take a taxi.

By air

London Gatwick Airport is the closest airport to Brighton. From Gatwick take the train to Brighton or Lewes and change for Falmer (see section on train travel above).

From Heathrow you can take the underground (London Transport) to Victoria Railway Station and then the train to Brighton and on to Falmer.

Alternatively, coaches (number 747) run from both Gatwick and Heathrow Airports to the centre of Brighton (from Heathrow - this is a good option if you have lots of luggage!).

If you are arriving at London City Airport take the train from Silvertown and City Airport to Canning Town, then get a tube (underground train) to London Bridge, and then a Thameslink train direct to Brighton and change for Falmer.


By Channel Tunnel

Eurostar operates train services to and from continental Europe via the Channel Tunnel. There is a passenger terminal at Ashford, but it is easier to carry on to London Waterloo Railway Station.

From Waterloo take the underground (London Transport) to Victoria Railway Station and then the train to Brighton and on to Falmer.
