Bullying and harassment – reporting tools

Single Reporting Tool

BSMS understands that sometimes things go wrong, or you experience or witness something that causes you distress or inconvenience. We developed this reporting tool to enable students and staff to easily report any issues they have experienced as soon as they arise, and respond to and address these in a timely and helpful manner.

You are welcome to report any issue you have experienced, witnessed, or being told about, including (but not limited to):

  • Concerns about your own health and wellbeing, or that of another student or peer;
  • Concerns about unprofessional or problematic behaviours exhibited by a peer, staff member, or colleague;
    • This specifically includes incidences of bullying and harassment, sexual misconduct, and discrimination; both in person and online
  • Matters of complaint relating to the academic provision of your course;
  • Matters of complaint relating to an incident or incidents of behaviour from another student or staff member;
  • Matters of complaint relating to an area of non-academic provision i.e. funding, accommodation, facilities.
  • Any issues you experience while on placement; either relating to the organisation/arrangement of the placement, or an issue or incident that occurs while you are attending a placement;

Reports cannot be made to this tool anonymously, as we need to know who you are in order to follow up or take any responsive action, but submitting a report does not mean you are automatically obligated to engage with any of the School’s internal procedures. Instead it invites the Student Casework Team to contact you directly about the matter you have reported, and provide information and advice on potential next steps, but action will not be taken without your consent unless your report suggests that there is immediate risk of harm to yourself or anyone else.

If you want to report anonymously, please refer to the Anonymous Reporting Tool but please note that no response can be provide or action taken with regards to a report made anonymously.

If the matter you are reporting relates to an incident of harassment, discrimination, violence, or abuse of any kind, this can be reported via this tool to notify the Medical School and enable us to address the issue and take appropriate action if required, but you may wish to reach out to the University of Brighton’s #NeverOK Disclosure Response Team who can provide and signpost internal and specialist support, assist you with reporting this formally, and help you manage your own safety and wellbeing. More information on this service can be found here.

Guidance on reporting using this tool can be found below.

View our guidance document here >

If you have any questions about the reporting tool, or would like support in submitting a report, please contact studentcasework@bsms.ac.uk or studentwellbeingandadvice@bsms.ac.uk.

Anonymous Reporting Tool

BSMS is committed to ensuring that it is a safe and comfortable environment for all students to study, learn, and develop within. We encourage students to let us know about any concerns they have or issues they have experienced, witnessed, or heard about during their time at BSMS.

While our preference would be for you to use the Single Reporting Tool which is not anonymous but allows us to provide more targeted follow up, support, and actions in response to any reports made, we do appreciate that sometimes you may wish to report anonymously. If that is the case, you are welcome to submit a report using this tool, but please be aware that BSMS will not be able to provide a response to any anonymous reports.

However, BSMS will record the nature of the anonymous report and will use the information collected to make positive changes within the school and to monitor and evaluate the school's culture and environment to make BSMS a more inclusive place to study and learn.

If you have any questions about the reporting tool, or would like support in submitting a report, please contact studentcasework@bsms.ac.uk or studentwellbeingandadvice@bsms.ac.uk.

While you will be required to disclose your identity to this team in order to access this support, it will be treated entirely confidentially and will not be taken forward in any way unless you are comfortable in doing so. More information on this service can be found here.

The below form has been created for the use of Brighton and Sussex Medical School students only.

  • Students are welcome to provide their name and email address below if they wish to do so. This information is optional and will only be visible to the Student Advice team. It does not commit a student to any further action, but it does mean that we have more options when responding to reports. Please note that if you opt to include your name and email, you will receive a follow up email on your report from the BSMS Student Advice team.

REPORTING HARASSMENT, DISCRIMINATION AND OPPRESSION

BSMS is committed to challenging racism, sexism, homophobia, ableism, transphobia and all forms of harassment and discrimination. We encourage students to report incidents they have experienced or witnessed. Ideally, we hope that students will approach the Student Wellbeing and Advice team; however, we recognise that sometimes students prefer to report anonymously.

This anonymous reporting tool is not a replacement for BSMS Student Wellbeing and Advice and if you have any urgent concerns or issues you must use our BSMS Student Wellbeing and Advice channels as your first point of contact. For more information please visit our BSMS Student Wellbeing and Advice pages here.

The anonymous reporting tool is for students who would like to anonymously report an incident. However, please note that we will not be able to identify you or contact you directly and therefore it is unlikely that we will be able to initiate an investigation or formal process about your concerns.

If you're not sure which is the most appropriate course of action to take, please consult the above flowchart.
