Single Module Study

Flexible, modular learning

Our extensive range of postgraduate modules gives you the flexibility to shape your learning around your professional goals. Each module provides in-depth clinical, professional, or research-focused study, allowing you to tailor your learning to suit your ambitions.

Whether you wish to take a single module, build credits toward a recognised postgraduate qualification, or update your knowledge without formal assessment, our modular structure allows you to study at your own pace, either individually, as part of a structured part-time pathway (see below re RPL), or through Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

Teaching and learning

BSMS postgraduate modules are normally delivered over a five‑day period at the University of Brighton Falmer campus or nearby NHS centres. Most modules include 35 hours of face‑to‑face teaching supported by approximately 165 hours of independent study. While many are taught in a single week, some modules may run across several weeks depending on the subject.

Modules may be taken formally, with assessment and the opportunity to earn Master’s-level credits (see below re RPL), or informally for Continuing Professional Development (CPD), where no assessment submission is required. For either option, a formal application must be submitted through the online Single Module application process.

Module credits and qualifications

Each module listed below carries 20 Level 7 credits (unless stated otherwise).

Modules may be taken individually or can contribute toward an academic qualification, as indicated in the table below:

Credit breakdown
Qualification Level 7 credits Equivalent number of modules    Maximum study period
 Single module  20   1  N/A
 PGCert    60  3  3 years
 PGDip    120  6  4 years
 MSc  180  6 + 60 credit dissertation  5 years
 MRes   180  4 + 100 credit dissertation

Please note, if you wish to take Single Modules in order to build towards an academic qualification you will need to apply for the PGCert after you have completed the second module. You cannot take three single modules and be awarded a PGCert without having been formally accepted on to the relevant PGCert.

Where applicable, candidates may obtain credits through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) for relevant study completed at another accredited institution. Qualification awards require completion of mandatory modules (these vary by qualification); in many instances these are combined with your choice of optional module(s) to achieve the credits required for the award. Please note you should make an application for RPL BEFORE starting the relevant award.
