About this event

Goodbye Breasts! A love letter, a farewell and a giant boob.

A creative project about breasts and what they mean when faced with losing them: filmmaker and Sussex professor Joanna Callaghan turns the camera on herself as she builds a giant inflatable breast and learns to love her body again after a double mastectomy.

This process prompts an exploration of breasts more widely from medical and cultural perspectives, bringing in other women’s voices through a series of creative and playful interventions.

The project aims to challenge entrenched narratives on how we deal with illness and open conversations about mastectomies and the effects on women’s lives.

Supported by medical and academic partners, arts funders, charities and patient groups, the results of the project will include a documentary film to be released in 2023, as well as a series of short films and an interactive installation.

Joanna will be in conversation with Bobbie Farsides, Professor of Clinical and Biomedical Ethics at Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), and will show work in progress from the project.

This free event is part of BSMS' Ethics in Performance series and takes place in the Chowen Lecture Theatre on the University of Sussex campus.

Joanna Callaghan is an artist filmmaker and Professor of Filmmaking in the School of Media, Arts and Humanities at the University of Sussex. You can find out more about her project on the Goodbye Breasts! website.
