The essence of any healthcare system is to identify, treat and prevent disease and promote health. Medicines use is the most common patient level healthcare activity and with an ageing population and patients taking many more medicines, it is becoming an even more prominent feature.
In the vast majority of clinical situations, the use of medicines does so much good in treating disease and positively shaping health. However, the development, prescribing, dispensing, administration and monitoring of medicines are complex, high-risk processes which, if not performed appropriately, can increase the risk of significant harm to a patient. In recognition of this, Medication Without Harm has been named as a World Health Organization Global Patient Safety Challenge, in order to reduce the risk of harm associated with medicines.
Professor Okorie will be reflecting on his contributions as an educator, researcher and clinician to the safe, effective and responsible use of medicines.
