About this session
Only recently has research begun to focus on the expression of ADHD and autism in women, and there is growing recognition that neurodiversity significantly impacts the experience of menstruation and menopause.
It can be difficult for people to work out whether their symptoms and experience are due to neurodiversity, hormones, stress/nervous system dysregulation – or a combination of all of these.
In this conversation, we explore the range of physical, psychological and emotional experiences that are more prevalent among ADHD and autistic people who menstruate. We discuss how a history of trauma may overlap with ADHD characteristics. We examine the high prevalence of menstrual conditions such as pre-menstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD) and endometriosis among neurodivergent people, and we explore approaches to support, care and accommodation.
Jane Dancey, women's health coach and pelvic embodiment expert, and Dr Chi Eziefula, a clinician and BSMS academic with expertise in Menstrual Health and Global Health and Infection, will be joined by Dr Jessica Eccles, neurodevelopmental psychiatrist and brain-body medicine expert at BSMS, for discussion; audience participation is encouraged.
This hybrid event will take place in person, in the Terrace Room of Bramber House at the University of Sussex, and online – please choose whichever option suits you best at the time of booking. If joining online, register now and we will send a meeting link closer to the event date.
