Stonewall Workplace Equality Index
The University of Sussex and the University of Brighton are committed to the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index. Stonewall is a lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBTQ+) rights charity based in the UK. Named after the Stonewall riots in New York’s Greenwich village in 1969, the charity is now the largest LGBTQ+ charity in Europe. Stonewall provides help and guidance aids for LGBTQ+ people and organisations, including guides on terminology and community resources.
University of Sussex:
The University of Sussex became a Stonewall Diversity Champion in 2018 and submitted its first application to the Stonewall Workplace Equality Index in 2019, with the aim of becoming a top 100 Employer by 2025. This was achieved in 2024, with the University of Sussex being ranked 30 in the Stonewall top 100 employers list. You can view the institutional LGBTQ+ Action plan here here >

University of Brighton
The University of Brighton has been placed at 14 in Stonewall’s Top 100 Employers List 2024 for leading LGBTQ+ inclusive employers. The University also hosts the Centre for Transforming Sexuality & Gender, whose researchers focus on themes related to sexuality, gender and social change with a core focus on producing research with community partners that impacts on policy and practice.
