Name: Charlotte Street
Job title: Senior Project Coordinator
Department: Department of Medical Education
Year started at BSMS: 2022

Tell us a bit about your background

Before BSMS, I was a primary school teacher for 10 years, and before that, I was a modelmaker making props for TV and film (not as glamorous as it sounds – I promise!). When I left teaching in 2022, I was lucky enough to get a job at BSMS working as a Course Coordinator looking after some of the post-graduate courses. This enabled me to understand the real meaning of work-life balance, and I discovered I could have proper hobbies! In 2023, I started a secondment as Senior Project Coordinator for the Leadership and Education Fellowship (LEF) and Multi-Professional Simulation Fellowship. In 2025, I was given the opportunity of taking another secondment to the Admissions, Outreach and Widening Participation team as Senior Student Recruitment Coordinator. This involved delivering talks in schools and colleges and facilitating the undergraduate interviews – I really enjoyed it!

What’s your role like day-to-day?

I am now back in my Senior Project Coordinator role and busy planning for the next LEF cohort and SimNet – a national simulation conference BSMS are hosting in June. My days at the moment are focusing on planning and marketing SimNet, which has been a steep learning curve! I have a great team working with me and together we are selling tickets, finding exhibitors, planning the schedule, and collating abstracts for presentations and workshops. It is an exciting project to be a part of and an excellent development opportunity. In between planning for SimNet, I am liaising with NHS Trusts supporting the recruitment of next years Leadership and Education Fellows.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

I get real fulfilment from helping people and enjoy working with others to collaborate on ideas and projects. I see great value in networking and often solve most of my problems by chatting in the kitchen! My colleague, Theresa, and I started Connect Club as a way to find out more about other PS staff and it has been wonderful meeting people I wouldn’t usually get a chance to work with. The next meet up is in July so keep an eye out for further information.

In terms of successes, which accomplishments are you most proud of?

I have recently been accepted onto the University of Sussex Leadership in Motion development programme. I hope this will enable me to develop my leadership skills and understand more about how I can demonstrate impact at BSMS. I was also nominated for the Sussex Awards 2026 with the rest of the BSMS Admissions Team for our coordination and management of the undergraduate interviews; it feels great to be recognised for all our hard work.

Tell me something about you that most people don’t know about you.

My claim to fame is that I made Captain America’s shield for the first film – the one that’s found in the ice, and also one that Chris Evans fought with (he kept asking us to make it lighter…). I also made lots of props for Pirates of the Caribbean and saw Michael Fassbender getting ready to film on the set of Prometheus.

What are your other interests / hobbies?

I am a squirrel scout leader (4-6 year olds) and am also Chair of the Trustee Board for my local scout group. I really missed working with children when I left teaching, so this felt like a good way to get some of that fulfilment back. I loved my time as a sea scout when I was younger and I’m excited to provide the same sort of experiences for my children as well as others. I also love the sea and reading – my perfect day would be sitting on a beach reading a book or listening to an audiobook without any interruptions!
