Name: Daisy Boston
Job title: EDI Coordinator
Year started at BSMS: 2025

Tell us a bit about your background

I was born in Tooting in South-West London and grew up in Hertfordshire, before moving to Brighton about 5 years ago to study for my BSc in Psychology and MA in Sexual Dissidence here at the University of Sussex. Alongside my studies I have worked in a lot of different roles across the University and within the Students Union and I am excited to bring my skills and knowledge to BSMS and hopefully help it to be as inclusive and as wonderful as it can be!

What’s your role like day-to-day?

My role is super varied so no two days look the same: I get to work with and communicate with teams all across BSMS and the wider university, work with Suze Cruttwell on EDI initiatives as well as working on my own projects; at the moment I am helping organise and implement an LGBTQ+ action plan, editing an infographic and collecting together some content for the June edition of the EDI newsletter.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

I think getting to work in an area I really care about and am knowledgeable in is one of the aspects of the role I really love – it feels great to be able to put my skills to use every day; I also get to work with a really lovely team/group of people – even though I haven’t been here very long, everyone at BSMS has been so welcoming and friendly and great to work with.

In terms of successes, which accomplishments are you most proud of?

I am proud of getting my degree and masters degree whilst working at the same time: it’s a really tough balancing act and I really commend anyone who does the same. In my second year of studying, I also got into the competitive JRA research programme at Sussex and I got to lead on and conduct my own research project on the experiences of trans+ people in the UK which I was also really proud of!

How do you contribute to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment at work?

I think the nature of my role lends itself well to this question – it is part of my job to hopefully create an inclusive and welcoming environment at BSMS – but in terms of my own personal contribution, I think that just being friendly and open towards people and creating a welcoming space where people feel listened to is key. Conversations around inclusivity can sometimes be challenging to your own personal worldview, but it is so important to keep an open mind and listen to others with different life experiences.

What are your other interests / hobbies?

In short, I just like to do a little bit of everything! I am a trained pianist/musician and I am currently in a band/musical project with some of my friends which has been super fun. In my spare time when I am not working at one of my millions of jobs I do some freelance illustration and graphic design work as well as painting and other artistic projects. If I am not doing any of these things, you can definitely find me curled up in a corner somewhere playing videogames (mostly Tears of the Kingdom or Animal Crossing) or reading!
