Name: Matt Stallworthy
Job title: Senior Recruitment and Outreach Officer
Year started at BSMS: 2025

Tell us a bit about your background

I grew up in Liverpool and studied Film and Television Production at the University of York. It was here where I first got into recruitment and outreach work as a Graduate Ambassador, helping to coordinate the university's open days, attending UCAS fairs and delivering outreach presentations in schools and colleges. I worked briefly at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in their events and engagement team (an adorable job!) before moving on to work at the University of Brighton in their Student Recruitment Events team until April 2025.

What’s your role like day-to-day?

It's a cliché to say but there is very little day-to-day when working in WP and Outreach! One day might be speaking to young people at a UCAS fair, another might be preparing and event on campus for prospective students to explore campus and our facilities, another day might be hosting a talk online.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

Linked to the above the varied nature about this role is what I like the most. Working in different locations and helping young people make choices about their future I find very engaging, active and rewarding.

In terms of successes, which accomplishments are you most proud of?

My degree was in Film and Television Production and I still try to get involved in productions when I can in my free time. Shortly after graduating I wrote a short film called Lucky Chicken, which won funding to be produced and went on to feature in film festivals around the world, shown at BAFTA and win gala prices at three of those festivals. A friend sent me a photo of my film being shown on United Airline flights after winning a competition in America which was very cool!

How do you contribute to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment at work?

I recently completed the Active Bystanding training led by Dunx and it was a great way to explore and discuss how we can be more inclusive at work and knowing how to intervene safely should a situation occur. I’m looking forward to getting involved in more training opportunities in the future.

What are your other interests / hobbies?

I’ve been doing improv for about twelve years, devolping skills in thinking on my feet and communication have proven very useful in my work life whenever I’m delivering a session or quickly problem solving at an event! I also enjoy comedy shows and going to the cinema, I recently got an Odeon membership and happy to chat new releases over lunch breaks!
