Sarah Hollebon 202

Name: Sarah Hollebon
Job title: Deputy Research Manager
Year started at BSMS: 2024

Tell us a bit about your background

I was born and raised here in Sussex. After completing my Bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Science at the University of Southampton, I started work in academic publishing where I worked across a range of biomedical journals. Ready for a change, I joined BSMS in December 2024.

What’s your role like day-to-day?

As part of the BSMS Professional Services research team, my day involves planning and implementing the range of research projects, initiatives, and workshops we deliver in the school. I am particularly involved with developing our school-specific grant support and our Open Research practices. Most recently my focus has been turned towards the upcoming Research Excellence Framework (REF) exercise, where I am involved in the People, Culture, Environment preparations with both our partner institutions.

What aspect of your role do you enjoy the most?

I really enjoy being part of the small but busy central research team at BSMS, and embracing the varied and fast-paced nature of the role. Playing a part in supporting our researchers to remove barriers and enable their development is very motivating.

How do you contribute to creating an inclusive and welcoming environment at work?

It’s important to recognise that researchers need tailored support depending on their career-stage and discipline. Listening to and engaging with our researchers to understand their needs has been an important part of my role so far, in order to drive forward a culture that is supportive and responsive to our colleagues.

Tell me something about you that most people don’t know about you.

I was a leader of a Girlguiding Rainbow unit for 10 years, and I currently have over 140 badges on my camp blanket!

What are your other interests / hobbies?

I have recently discovered a love for gardening - it’s been a good lesson in embracing uncertainty! I also enjoy reading and sewing (or trying to!) in my spare time.
