Biography

Manuela is a Research Fellow in Neuroimmunology at BSMS. She graduated with an Msc in Biological Sciences in 1987 at the University of Pisa, Italy and obtained her Specialization in Pharmacological Research in 1991 at Mario Negri Institute for Pharmacological Research in Milan. From 1992 until 2000, Manuela carried out postdoctoral work at the Picower Institute for Medical Research (Manhasset, NY, USA), at DIBIT, San Raffaele Scientific Institute (Milan, Italy) and at Stanford University School of Medicine (CA, USA). She worked at Mario Negri Institute in Milan as a Senior Researcher from 2000 until 2008, at which point she attained her current position at BSMS.

Research

Manuela is interested in cytokine biology and inflammation. During her postdoctoral work, she studied the dysregulation of the cytokine network in HIV patients and in primary human macrophages infected in vitro with HIV, and the cytokine mechanisms that regulate HIV infection and replication in different subsets of primary human T cells.

Since 2000, at Mario Negri Institute in Milan and then at BSMS, she has worked in collaboration with Prof Pietro Ghezzi to study the anti-inflammatory and neuroregenerative effects of a family of cytokines recently defined tissue-protective cytokines, among which erythropoietin, and has contributed to research on redox regulation of the inflammatory and immunological response.

Teaching

At BSMS, Manuela supervises student research projects for module 404, undergraduate summer projects and PhD students. She offers Student Selected Components (SSCs) for modules 103 and 104. She is also an Academic Tutor and the Academic Lead of the Academic Skills programme.
