Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) is running a series of Professional Development sessions (Musculoskeletal System Anatomy and Applied Function) aimed at extending your knowledge of the human body. These sessions will offer a unique opportunity to learn with expert anatomists, using specially selected and prepared human donor material (including real skeletons, specimens in jars, and dissected human body parts) as well as the latest ultrasound and digital platforms.
This session on 22 October will cover the main anatomy of the cardio respiratory system, including the heart, lungs, diaphragm. This will follow the pathway of gas exchange including the anatomy of the nose, mouth and trachea. Into the lungs to explain the anatomy of breath at rest and during exercise. The anatomy of the heart will follow the pathway of a red blood cell and will explore how the heart responds to changing demands. The session will explore the anatomy associated with common conditions for example, asthma, coronary artery disease. Participants will be able to use ultrasound on participants (who consent) to explore the anatomy covered.
The sessions have a musculoskeletal focus. Sessions will take you through the anatomy and its function, including its normal and natural variation, covering all aspects of the bones, muscles, arteries and nerves. Staff will help you move between different modes and views of the anatomy (surface to deep) so that you can apply your knowledge to your practice.
The sessions are designed for professionals who already have an introductory knowledge of anatomy. For example; physiotherapists, sports therapists, fitness trainers. For each session, after a short introductory talk of the anatomical region, you will work in small groups in the anatomy laboratory guided by expert staff as you explore the anatomy. To maximise the learning experience, participants will receive the teaching materials in advance, allowing them to come prepared and fully engage with the opportunity.
The session itself will last 2 hours. Depending on your knowledge of anatomy, we would anticipate the pre-reading to take between 1-2 hours. The CPD therefore available for this session is recommended to be 4 hours. This session is not-credit bearing, but after the session you will be provided with a certificate of attendance that details the anatomy covered and the hours of learning.
You are welcome to attend just one session or all of them.
The sessions will operate as in-person sessions at BSMS under the Human Tissue Act Public Display licence. You will be required to follow strict protocols in the laboratory and non-compliance will result in removal from the laboratory. This will include wearing PPE and no phones are permitted (you will be allowed to store them in a secure area). Over 18s only. At registration you will be required to provide an email and details of your current work employment/ professional registration. These details will be kept for the Human Tissue Authority.
Due to resources, we do not know when we will be able to run a future series, so we are sorry but if you cannot attend, we cannot provide a refund, only if possible, we might be able to book you into a future session.
