About this session

The climate and ecological emergency is increasingly affecting every aspect of society, with significant consequences for individual and population health. It is also creating new challenges for healthcare systems, while highlighting opportunities to improve health through cleaner air, healthier diets, more active lifestyles and more sustainable ways of delivering care.

As a medical school, Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) has an important role to play in responding to these challenges. This includes preparing future health professionals with the knowledge and skills needed to promote health and deliver sustainable healthcare, supporting research that helps reduce the environmental impact of healthcare systems, and working with partners to minimise the environmental footprint of its own activities.

Organised by members of the BSMS Sustainability Committee, this event will provide an opportunity to learn more about how staff and students are addressing sustainability across teaching, research and operations.

The evening will begin with a screening of the People's Emergency Briefing film, which brings together nationally recognised experts from across climate science, public health, economics and biodiversity to explain the scale and urgency of the climate and nature emergency and its implications for communities, public services and future generations. Following the screening, attendees will have the opportunity to take part in a Q&A session with a panel of BSMS and partner university representatives, who will share insights into current projects and initiatives and discuss how sustainability can be embedded across higher education and healthcare.
