For December's talk, we are joined by Dr Katie East. Dr East is an Associate Professor in Public Health at BSMS whose research interests primarily focus on tobacco and nicotine use, the public health implications of smoking and vaping, and policies to change use.
Many people think that the problem of smoking is solved, but this is not the case. Tobacco smoking remains a leading cause of preventable death and disease, with over 5 million adults in the UK still smoking. Tobacco control policies are the cornerstone of reducing smoking uptake and increasing smoking cessation. The nicotine landscape has also changed dramatically over the past decade with the rapid uptake of vapes, which are much less harmful than smoking and support quitting, but are not without risks. This talk will discuss the wide range of research currently being undertaken around tobacco and vaping, including policies to reduce smoking and youth vaping, and public misperceptions of vapes.
