Fourth year student Rebecca Webster discusses her tips for managing the transition to university study, what she’s been involved in outside of medicine whilst at BSMS and preparing for the UCAT.

What made you want to study medicine?

I just felt like it was the job for me. I want to travel and help people, both things I feel can be achieved as a doctor. I love the problem-solving aspect of medicine; you get to work with so many different types of people in dynamic teams to get to the bottom of all kinds of issues that will hopefully have a positive impact on someone.

What made you want to study at BSMS?

When I visited, I loved the city and liked that the medical school is very unique in that you have access to two universities.

How did you prepare for your medicine interviews? Any top tips?

I did lots of research to get an idea of what to expect. It’s really important to keep up to date with current medical news. That's the one thing that caught me off guard in my interview!

Top tips for the UCAT?

Do mocks. It’s all I did over and over again and I think it made all the difference to me as it’s such a unique test with the question styles that it uses.

Do you have any advice for managing the transition to university?

Find a good solid group of friends who you can see yourself staying friends with for years as they'll help make the transition so much easier.

Are you involved in any sports or societies? Can you tell us about them?

I’m the president of the University of Brighton polo team and have been involved with it for the last two years. I love that I get to learn a totally new skill at uni as it’s so unique and is a great break from all things medicine.

What has been your BSMS highlight?

I loved my weeks in surgery where I got to spend it with anaesthetics and emergency as it helped narrow down what I want to do in the future so much.

What is your favourite part of living in Brighton and Hove?

I love being so close to the sea and the countryside. Brighton is so lively; three years and I'm not bored yet as there's always stuff to do.

If you could go back in time to give one piece of advice to your younger self, what would it be?

Don't overwork! Work smarter not harder. Enjoy your time in the early years of medical school as it only gets busier.

Now that you’re over halfway through your course, is medicine still the right path for you?

Yes. I can't see myself in another career.

Describe your medical school experience in three words.

Enlightening, fascinating, and lively.
