Eye Surgeon Receives OBE in New Year Honours

Professor Christopher Liu has been appointed by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for Services to Ophthalmology.

Prof Liu OBE is a senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at the Sussex Eye Hospital in Brighton and has worked as a consultant there for more than twenty years.

On receiving the award, Prof Liu, said: "I am overjoyed to receive an OBE and humbly accept the honour. This award means so much to myself, my team, teachers, colleagues, my many fellows and students, and my family."

He was the first surgeon in the UK to learn a pioneering technique that involved restoring sight through the reconstruction of a new eye using a small plastic lens and one of the patient’s own teeth.

He has also taught this technique to many international teams and helped them set up in Japan, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Australia, Egypt, Jordan and Iran.

As well as working at the Sussex Eye Hospital, Professor Liu founded the Sussex Eye Foundation, a registered charity with an aim to create a state-of-the-art eye facility for the South East of England. He is also in charge of Undergraduate Teaching in Ophthalmology at the BSMS.
